“All
my bags are packed and I’m ready go…” , humming this song as it plays on my mp3
while preparing myself for the five – day Community Immersion Calinog, Iloilo.
Bags are packed! Securing those things which are necessary in that five – day
stay in Jaycon, Elementary School. We’ll be going to a place where we’re
totally strangers, where we will meet new faces, new set of friends, new
environment and of course a new experience for all of us. A new page in my book
will be added, a great and one a kind experience will be encoded on this page
of mine. This is what I’m looking forward for. Hope it will be fine guys.
Before leaving this page of my life,
let me first give you some background information about this Community
Immersion. Community Immersion with Special Topics (Field Study 3) is one of
the course subjects were taking this semester. It is a course designed to give
experiential learning to education students as part and issues we will be
experiencing in our teaching profession. But what makes this Community
Immersion different from others, is that this is a research project of Dr.
Vicente Handa in joint with the U.S. Embassy and the West Visayas State
University – College of Education. This Project S.E.R.V.E. really aims to serve
the community at the same time to train us in our future field.
That’s what this course is all
about, now, join me as I am exploring to the next page of my life.
See you!

Calinog,
is a first class municipality
in the province
of Iloilo,
Philippines.
The town got its name from the Hilgaynon word “Kalinong”, which means calm or
pacific. This place is well – known for its Hirinugyaw – Suguidanonay Festival.
"Hirinugyaw",
from a Visayan term for "jubilation" or "rejoicing," was
inspired by the Dinagyang Festival of Iloilo City through a festivity showing
the town's devotion to the Child Jesus and highlighted as it turns out in
celebration for the feast of Sto. Niño. This has become a feast with success
for the people of Calinog. The festival has given life in their faith and has
become a growing devotion in their hearts. The dances performed are usually in
a repetitive and easy-to-learn steps.
“Suguidanonay”,
a traditional story about the town’s history and culture narrated through
chanting. This was the story of Amburukay, the hermit sister of Makabagting
which asks for Paiburong’s daughters in payment of the bamboo he cuts down. The
two maidens wre kept in a golden chamber and became “binukots” (well – kept
maidens). Amburukay vows that her adopted daughters
will marry only those who succeed in stealing her golden pubic hair.
One
day, Labaw Donggon, a courageous man and a good guitarist, breaks one of his
guitar strings. Hearing about Amburukay's pubic hair being a good replacement,
he stole it and he was successful. On realizing the loss of her pubic hair,
Amburukay goes in search of the theft. Knowing that Labaw Donggon is the one
who steal her pubic hair, she commands him to marry her in return. On the
marriage day, Labaw Donggon is pleasantly surprised to discover that the two
maidens have been prepared for the wedding. Thus begins the married life of
Labaw Donggon and Matan-ayon, two important characters in the epic.
That
is how the Calinog is all about. A wonderful place, with wonderful people and
leaders.
